The bestseller City on Fire will be adapted into a series for Apple TV+. The story of a tangled murder investigation will be written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who’ve worked on multiple successful TV series together.
In City on Fire, an NYU student is shot in Central Park. Samantha Cicciaro is alone; there are no witnesses and very little physical evidence. As the investigation goes on, she’s revealed to be the crucial connection between a series of mysterious citywide fires, the downtown music scene, and a wealthy uptown real estate family fraying under the strain of the many secrets they keep.
Schwartz and Savage will write all 8 episodes in the first season and will serve as showrunners. The show is being produced by their company, Fake Empire. Schwartz created the Fox teen drama series The O.C., on which Savage was a writer. Together they developed Gossip Girl for The CW.
It’s not known when City on Fire will make its global debut on Apple TV+.
The book by Garth Risk Hallberg is highly acclaimed, and earned glowing reviews from everyone from Stephen King to The New York Times.
City on Fire joins other Apple TV+ crime dramas
It hasn’t escaped Apple’s attention that crime dramas are a popular genre. Fans can watch Chris Evans in Defending Jacob or Truth Be Told. And there’s Home Before Dark. Plus, there are more in production, like a detective drama from Robert Downey Jr.’s production company.
Watching any of these series requires a $4.99 subscription to Apple’s streaming video service.
