Hello Sunshine, one of the more prolific production companies behind hit Apple TV+ shows, is reportedly considering a sale. And Apple’s said to be interested.

The company is co-owned by Reese Witherspoon, while Lauren Powell Jobs, who was married to the late Steve Jobs, is a notable investor.

Hello Sunshine’s previous shows for Apple include The Morning Show, Truth Be Told, My Kind of Country, Surface, and The Last Thing He Told Me. It has also produced Little Fires Everywhere for Hulu and HBO’s Big Little Lies. The company could reportedly fetch as much as $1 billion.

Deadline writes that:

“It’s a period of rapid consolidation in media marked by a quest for content to feed an army of streaming services. Amazon recently agreed to buy MGM for $8.45 billion. Apple is said to be one of the parties interested in Hello Sunshine. It’s not clear that any deal will go down but the outreach shows that big media and tech companies are casting a wider and wider net.”

Considering that Hello Sunshine’s most notable shows are produced for other networks, I don’t know what the acquisition would bring with it — aside from a skilled team able to pick hit shows. However, if it meant augmenting Apple’s back catalog, that would surely be a good thing.

Expanding the Apple TV+ catalog

Right now, Apple TV+ is big on quality, but short on quantity. So far the company has resisted buying up libraries of existing shows in favor of building its own. That’s probably a strong strategy in the long run, since it gives Apple shows and movies available nowhere else. But it also means that it has a much smaller offering of content in the short run.

Hal Vogel, CEO of Vogel Capital Management, previously said that Apple is cautious about big acquisitions when it comes to studios. Vogel noted that CEO Tim Cook is “afraid of shareholder blowback if he goes Hollywood in a big way.”
