YouTube channel ChargerLAB has gotten its hands on Apple’s new MagSafe Battery Pack and given it the teardown treatment to take a look at what secrets it contains within.

The video, which can check out below, shows off the Battery Pack’s dual-cell design. It makes it look like it essentially contains twin iPhone batteries — providing a total power output of 11.13Wh, based on two 3.82 volt batteries or 7.62 volts combined.

The Battery Pack, like the old Jony Ive-designed Smart Battery Case, has been mocked for its bulky design. What it does give you for this, however, is a whole lot of extra juice for powering your iPhone. Now the first teardown video shows how it works.

Other features that can be seen in the video include the device’s capacitive sensing coils, NFC detection coil and chip, and design built for heat shielding and dissipation. One of the neatest parts of it is the ring of 60 tiny magnets. These hold the battery pack in place without it physically having to be attached to the iPhone. Apple supposedly had some challenges regarding its MagSafe Battery Pack design. However, it finally managed to create what it was hoping for — with the finished product recently going on sale for $99.

Tough to fix?

The ChargerLAB video does not include any repairability score, a la iFixit. But based on the use of adhesives and other design elements, it does not appear like it would be particularly easy to fix. The repairability of Apple devices has been under attack recently courtesy of more scrutiny regarding the right to repair.

What do you think of Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack? Are you planning to buy one? Have you already bought one? Has the bulky design put you off? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
