The just-announced Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is one of the first handsets with an under-screen camera. It’s cutting edge but the camera is so obvious it demonstrates why the tech is not ready to go mainstream.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was unveiled this morning. The Android with a folding display promises to be more durable than its predecessors.
And the under-display camera is drawing attention, too. And not praise. Tipster Ice universe said via Twitter, “In terms of the display of the under-screen camera, Fold3 is indeed the worst.”
The Verge said, “you can absolutely tell there’s a camera in there.” But also noted it looks worse in photos than in real life.
Under-screen camera not hitting the mark
The goal of an under-display camera is to remove the need for a display cutout holding the front-facing lens. For iPhone users, that’s the notch. But the Galaxy Z Fold 3 traded a screen cutout for an unsightly blemish on the display.
While most Apple users have become accustomed to the notch since it debuted in the iPhone X, few would complain about it going away. But the Fold 3 shows there’s not yet a viable alternative. It’s possible Apple might have a solution by 2023, though.
As for Samsung’s latest, the under-screen camera isn’t a highlight of a product that costs $1,799.
