FCC filings spill new MagSafe Charger ahead of iPhone 13 event

Apple may be planning to unveil a revised MagSafe Charger alongside iPhone 13. A new version of the accessory, with model number A2548, was this week spilled in FCC filings that were submitted by Apple just last month.

Apple’s MagSafe accessories fix one of the biggest complaints we’ve long had with wireless charging. They’re not only faster than traditional pads, but they use magnets to ensure perfect alignment every time.

It looks like Apple may have found a way to make the MagSafe Charger even better for iPhone 13. A revised version was recently submitted to the FCC for approval, and its new model number suggests it will come with changes.

The current MagSafe Charger, which launched last year alongside iPhone 12, has the model number A2140. The new model is identified as A2548, and according to the documentation, it’s design to work with different devices.

The charger was tested with four “new phone” units that are believed to be iPhone 13 variants. It is also compatible with iPhone models A2172, A2176, A2341, and A2342, which are all versions of iPhone 12.

What’s interesting is that those iPhone 12 models are described in the filing as “legacy phone” models. This suggests the new charger will work with iPhone 12, but that it was specifically designed for a new iPhone model.

What could a new MagSafe Charger bring?

The revisions Apple has made to the MagSafe Charger for iPhone 13 could be minor, internal changes that we won’t even notice. But there’s a chance they will be more obvious improvements that make the charger even better.

An earlier rumor claimed Apple is planning to bring stronger magnets to iPhone 13 for an even more secure MagSafe connection. This would allow the charger to work better with cases that aren’t MagSafe-compatible.

Dave Zats, who uncovered the FCC listing, suggests that the charger may have been updated for Apple’s upcoming third-generation AirPods, which, like iPhone, could attach to the MagSafe Charger magnetically.

We hope to find out the real reason for the MagSafe Charger revision when Apple unveils iPhone 13, which could be as soon as next week.
