The final episode of the first season of Mr. Corman premiered on Apple TV+ this week, and it turns out that’s all there’ll ever be. The show starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt has reportedly been cancelled.
That’s a rare move by Apple’s streaming service. This is only the second show it’s nixed.
Mr. Corman’s problems will never be worked out
Mr. Corman is — or was — a dark comedy about a public school teacher who’s also a failed professional musician. It follows Josh Corman (Gordon-Levitt) after his ex-fiancé Megan moves out and his high school buddy Victor moves in. The series shows him struggling with anxiety, loneliness, and “a sinking suspicion that he sucks as a person.”
It premiered this summer but Deadline reports that there won‘t be a second season.
Some critics liked the show: it has a 70% score from Rotten Tomatoes. But the Cult of Mac review eviscerated it, calling the lead character “a miserable jerk” and saying, “if you go 10 seconds without wanting to get him off your television screen, you’ll have beat my record.”
There’s no official word on why the show was canceled but it probably didn’t have anything to do with lackluster reviews. In television, what really matters is the audience. And the viewers apparently didn’t turn up for Mr. Corman, causing Apple TV+ to drop it.
But this doesn’t mean the end of Gordon-Levitt’s collaboration with Apple. He’s a producer and provides a voice for the animated series Wolfboy and the Everything Factory, which debuted in September.
For those keeping score at home, the first show Apple TV+ cancelled was Little Voice, which also got only a single season. This is just two downchecks out the 47 programs the service has launched, or is about to. That’s not counting Dickinson, which will soon start its third and final season amid strong support from critics and audiences.
