New Apple “M1 Max” and “M1 Pro” chips have appeared for the first time ahead of today’s big “Unleashed” event, which is expected to bring big Mac upgrades. It’s not yet clear if these will be their final names, however.
Recent rumors have suggested at least one of Apple’s next-generation chips, which are expected to debut inside a new MacBook Pro and possibly other machines that Apple will announce later today, will be named the M1X.
New Apple Silicon chips on the way
We can’t know for certain exactly what Apple will unveil during today’s event. But we’re all fairly sure we’ll see a MacBook Pro refresh at the very least — and that the new portables will be powered by faster Apple Silicon chips.
The M1 inside the current 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini and 24-inch iMac has already blown us away. But its successor, which could feature up to 16 cores for processing and 32 for graphics, will be even more spectacular.
The latest reports have indicated the chip will be called the M1X, but according to one app developer who has been speaking to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it could instead be named the M1 Max or M1 Pro.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman reveals that both the M1 Max and M1 Pro names have appeared in app logs shared by the unnamed Mac app developer ahead of today’s Unleashed event.

“I’m not saying Apple will take that direction with its actual marketing names, but that’s another—albeit more confusing—possibility,” Gurman added.
It’s entirely possible these are internal monikers for the chips, and that their final, public names will be different. Apple has chosen to add the X and Z suffixes to its faster iPhone and iPad chip releases in the past, but it could take a different route with the M-series that’s predominantly used inside Macs.
