Apple Watches are mostly used for good but a clever criminal used one to steal half a million dollars in cash from a drug dealer.
The leader of a gang of thieves used his wearable to track the dealer to where the money was hidden.
No honor among thieves
To be clear, the alleged criminal didn’t find a way to surreptitiously track someone else’s Apple Watch. When Darren Lindsay wanted to follow a drug dealer he thought was loaded with cash, he allegedly placed his own Watch under the dealer’s car bumper. He was then able to track the device, according to the New York Post.
Lindsay and his crew of thieves supposedly followed the dealer to a hotel, beat him up, stole his room key, then used the key to take $500,000 from his hotel room.
“All of this information is supported by detailed cellsite location data, including [from] his Apple Watch and the phones of the defendant,” according to prosecutors who later tracked down the gang. And police also found a picture of the robbers posing with the ill-gotten cash.

Apple Watches have been used to foil crimes large and small, and save people’s lives too. It’s not often one is used to commit a crime.
